i'm fairly sure this is the best (ah! very scary to use a word implying some kinda absolute value, but, well, it, if anything, is deserving.) book ever written. her placement of the reader, which might be the most important thing to me (at present, anyway), is genius. i will have to reread it to detail the mechanics of that manipulation. for now, suffice it to say that virginia woolf knew me (in general), how to tease me, how to teach me, how to blame me, how to exploit me, how to compel me, how to talk to me, how to touch me, how to situate me. how to break and fix me. i am afraid to read anything else she has written, so they sit on my shelves taunting me.
Subtle quips, intelligent prose, laughing when you shouldn't... What didn't I learn?
Interesting history of the estates in the Hamptons; action of characters was most entertaining
