If you're tired of reading the same stale fiction (predictable plots, non-descript characters), give Murakami, probably Japan's most famous contemporary writer, a try. This quirky novel about an ordinary man who gets caught up in a bizarre quest (a literal “wild sheep chase”) is likely to be different from anything else you've read. Translated from the original Japanese, A Wild Sheep Chase reads like a detective story, but whimsical, surreal, filled with absurd humor. You'll meet a woman with beautiful “perfectly formed” ears, a limousine chauffeur who claims to have God's direct phone number and, of course, the mysterious sheep with a cream-colored star on its back. One of my favorite books.
