I didn't know whether to classify this as general fiction or sci-fi; in the end, it seems more like a political novel with sci-fi elements (a decaying, totalitarian society at war following some catastrophic event that left women infertile). I didn't care much for the characters (with the exception of the chauffeur, who was something of a wild-card), but the way Atwood took a possibility/concept and built a world around it was extremely intriguing. So despite my general distaste for where the plot was going, the images and experiences she layered to express the frustrations, fears, and longings of the protagonist were unforgettable.
